Ideas for Sacrifice During Lent for Catholics and All People

Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a period of self-sacrifice that is becoming a trend for more than just Catholics and Christians. Controlling a sense of self-denial can be a character building experience.

Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a period of self-sacrifice that is becoming a trend for more than just Catholics and Christians. Controlling a sense of self-denial can be a character building experience. Trying to give up something is a challenge that can be a positive test of will power. Here is a list of things to help jump start your imagination for Lent sacrifices and start new healthy or positive habits.

Sweets and candy are always popular choices based partly on sheer popularity. For many people a little piece of candy helps pull their day together and can be a difficult but healthy choice. Substituting an orange or apple can give you the sugar you crave with an additional dose of vitamins to boost your immune system.

Soda is a great choice to remove calories and artificial ingredients from your routine. A fruit smoothie or fresh juice is a healthy alternative.

Reducing your consumption of television for an hour a day can turn into a more productive outlet like reading a book or getting more exercise.

Lent is as much about beginning a new positive routine as it is eliminating vices in my opinion. Try combining the sacrifice of giving up something with the building of a new positive trend.

Take up an instrument. Developing a new creative outlet during Lent may be the opportunity to let off steam or nurture an interest into a new found passion like playing the drums to release anxiety.

Fast food is a good challenge for many people who enjoy a quick meal once a week or live on the go lifestyles. Try picking up a few groceries and making food that you can take with you during the day like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, dried fruit, and oatmeal squares. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite.

Giving up coffee is a chance to break the habit and reliance on caffeine. Find another method of energizing your routine by adding a walk, sleeping more, or substituting tea or a healthy treat.

Video games are a part of many people's lives like myself, and this may be a good time to redirect some time to a more educational use (or game).

Quitting a vice like gambling, smoking, or drinking might be kick started by forty days of cold turkey or step down reduction patterns. You don’t have to be Christian to partake in bettering yourself and challenging your self-control. Pick something today and test yourself to be a better person.
