Factoid Lesson Plan of the Day: Confucianism - 2 - Fool and Money Soon Parted, All You Need is Love

This is an overview of the teachings of Confucius. It is meant for teachers and students of Chinese History and Philosophy

3 - 3-3 All You Need Is Love, 3-8 Poetry Is The Language of Philosophy, 3-14 Order Precedes Learning and 3-22 Know Thrift from Greed

A. The Eight-Fold Path:

3-3 The Master said: A man without love, what is courtesy to him? A man without love, what is music to him?"

Inference: All you need is love (See John Lennon) Life is unbearable without love.

3-8 - Tzu-hsia asked: "What is the meaning of:

Her cunning smiles,

Her dimples light,

Her lovely eyes,

So clear and bright,

The ground, not yet

With colors dight'?"

The Master said: Coloring follows groundwork."

"Then does courtesy follow after?" said Tzu-hsia

"Shang. said the Master, "thou hast hit my meaning!

Now I can talk of poetry to thee."

Inference: Poetry is the language of philosophy; particularly Chinese philosophy. We can learn as much if not more from the poetry of an era than by its history.

3-14 - The Master said: two lines of kings have passed beneath the ken of Chou. How rich in art is Chou! It is Chou I follow."

Inference: Confucius refers to the Chou kings establishing order for long periods of time allowing learning and art to grow; therefore order precedes learning (as my friend Bob Donus knows well at Christopher Robin Academy).

3-22 - The Master said: "How shallow was Kuan Chung!"

"But," said one, "was not Kuan Chung thrifty?"

"Kuan owned San Kuei, and in his household none doubled offices," said the Master; "was that thrift?"

"At least Kuan Chung was versed in courtesy."

The Master said: "Kings screen their gates with trees; Kuan, too, had trees to screen his gate. When two kings make merry together, they have a stand for the turned-down versed in courtesy, who is not versed in courtesy?"

Inference: One should know the difference between thrift and greed. Excess determines the difference.

Critical Questions

Why is love important in our lives? In our society?

Why is poetry so important? How important is it in our society?

Why must order precede learning? Do we have that in our society?

How can you tell if you are greedy or thrifty?

4-2 A Fool and His Money Are Soon Parted, 4-6 Avoid Extremes, 4-14 Be Worthy; Not Famous, 4-17 To Thine Own Self Be True

4-2 - The Master said: "Loveless men cannot bear need long, they cannot bear fortune long. Loving hearts find peace in love; clever heads find profit in it."

Inference: A man who does not love is a fool. A fool and his money are soon parted.

4-6 - The Master said: "A friend to love, a foe to evil, I have yet to meet. A friend to love will set nothing higher. In love's service, a foe to evil will let no evil touch him. Were a man to give himself to love, but for one day, I have not seen anyone whose strengt, h would fail him. Such men there may be, but I have not seen one."

Inference: Avoid extremes; live a little, love a little; and be moderate.

4-14 - The Master said: Be not concerned at want of place; be concerned that thou stand thyself. Sorrow not at being unknown, but seek to be worthy of note."

Inference: It is more important to be a good person than to be well known; therefore we derive "Be worthy; not famous. 4-17 - The Master said: At sight of worth, think to grow like it. When evil meets thee, search thine own heart."

Inference: We must search our own hearts to know whether we are being good or evil; therefore we derive "To Thine Own Self Be True" (borrowed later by the Bard)

Why is it foolish not to love?

Why should we avoid extremes?

Why is it more important to be a good person than to be famous?

Do we know when we are being good or bad?
